We Have a Formidable Team to Win W/Cup Ticket – Ugbade (allAfrica.com)

The National Under20 team, Flying Eagles flew to Senegal yesterday for this year’s African Youth Championship (AYC) which kicks off on Sunday with one strong mission which is to pick one of the tickets to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in May in New Zealand.
Assistant coach of the team, Nduka Ugbade gave strong indication of the team’s readiness to pick one of the slots to represent Africa at the FIFA U-20 World Cup when he spoke to Sports Vanguard on phone shortly before their departure yesterday.
Ugbade who was part of the Golden Eaglets’ success story at the African U-17 and FIFA U-17 World Cup in Morocco and Saudi Arabia respectively last year boasted they assembled a very formidable team that can stand the test in Senegal.
“We are very prepared and just like we did in Morocco during the CAF U-17 championship, our primary mission to this year’s AYC in Senegal is to pick a World Cup ticket, then we shall concentrate on the AYC trophy which has been elusive to us for some years now.
” We have a very formidable team even without the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Chidiebere Nwakali, who could not be released by their clubs because the championship is not in FIFA’s calendar. That does not mean they won’t be part of the team if we qualify for the World Cup. We have a good representative to the championship”, said the first Eaglets Captain to win U-17 World Cup in China 85.
Speaking ahead of their first game on Sunday against the host country, Senegal, Ugbade admitted that it would be a tough duel but, affirmed that they would as much as possible control the game technically and ensure that the outcome is controlled technically as well.
He said, ” against host Senegal, we know that it is not going to be easy, but we’ll try and ensure that the outcome is positive. Like we have done in he past, we may have the youngest team in the competition, but we are very formidable.
And like the chief coach, Manu Garba said, the World Cup ticket is paramount. We are going to take our game one after the other and ensure that we win the championship”.
