UNRWA key for peace, stability in Middle East- FM

Cairo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, said that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is a necessary investment to build peace and stability that all of us are seeking for.

Addressing a special session at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo on Tuesday upon Jordan’s request, Safadi discussed ways to mobilize political and financial support for UNRWA.

Safadi warned that failure to protect the agency has severe consequences on the Middle East region’s security.

Jordan, Safadi said, will continue to work with all stakeholders to support the agency, stressing the need to enbale UNRWA to perform its role in serving refugees.

He added that protection of UNRWA is a protection of the rights of 5 million of Palestinian refugees in decent living and the right of hundreds of thousands of students to education and health.

In a press conference that followed the special session, Safadi said 560 thousand Palestinian students are seeking for their right to health and education, noting that supporting UNRWA is a message from the international community that it still remains committed to its role towards the refugee issue.

Safadi raised a question on the fate of 260 thousand students in Gaza, adding that ” Dose the international community want to send them to schools, or to conflicts and wars?”
