Russia: INF withdrawal brings serious consequences

Amman, Russia said that the U.S decision to suspend and leave the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty will negatively affect the Russian-American relations, as well as the world at large.

The Russian envoy to the United States on Tuesday told Novosti news agency that his country has put so many efforts to keep the treaty for its importance in achieving stability in Europe and around the world.

He added that the United states supported the INF as it corresponded to its interests and frankly declared that it needed such an agreement with China, noting that Washington invented a false pretext called “9M729 Russian missile” to exit the treaty.

The INF Treaty was signed in 1987 by then-leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and then-US President Ronald Reagan. The leaders agreed to destroy all cruise or ground-launched ballistic missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (310 and 3,400 miles).
