Iran says U.S. sanctions end path to diplomacy

Amman, Iran announced Tuesday that U.S. imposed new sanctions on the country’s top leadership will permanently close the path to diplomacy between Tehran and Washington.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, said on Twitter that imposing useless sanctions on Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy.

“Trump’s desperate administration is destroying the established international mechanisms for maintaining world peace and security,” Mousavi added.

Diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran have been severed since 1980.

The United States targeted Khamenei and other top Iranian officials with sanctions on Monday.
