Int’l conference on nuclear reactors kicks off at Dead Sea

Dead Sea, The international conference on nuclear reactors and the peaceful use of nuclear energy kicked off on Monday in the Dead Sea, organized by the International Group on Research Reactors in cooperation with the European Research Reactor Conference.

The Conference, hosted by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), was inaugurated by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Hala Zwati, on behalf of Prime Minister Omar Razzaz.

In remarks at the opening ceremony, Zwati outlined key scientific developments in the Kingdom, including the production of medical radioisotopes by the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) and marketing the products in the local market.

She drew attention to the InfraRed beamline plan by the Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) for local and regional researchers to conduct research in the fields of life sciences, medicine, pharmacy, chemical analysis, archaeology and geology.

JAEC Chairman, Khaled Toukan, gave a lecture on the landmark advancements in the Jordanian nuclear program, particularly nuclear research and training, and the SESAME.

The conference brought together 240 scientists and international experts from 40 countries.
