FM meets EU foreign policy chief

Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs in the caretaker government, Ayman Safadi, and High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, on Sunday, held talks on ways to enhance cooperation and coordination between Jordan and the EU.

They Also discussed regional developments, especially those related to the Palestinian issue and the Syrian crisis.

Safadi and Mogherini underlined the deep-rooted partnership between Jordan and the EU and stressed keenness to expand their economic, trade and development relations. They also said they will continue coordinating efforts to find solutions to regional issues and achieve security and stability in the region.

At a joint press conference, Mogherini said the EU appreciates the Kingdom’s role in promoting security and stability in the region and that Jordan is the best partner for the EU, which will continue to stand by it and support its economic and development march.

She added: “Jordan’s role in the region is very important and is done with all wisdom and balance, and we will support it with all our means,” indicating that the bloc considers providing a soft loan worth 100 million euros to the Kingdom.

The EU foreign policy chief said the bloc will continue to provide economic aid to the Kingdom and maintain economic support levels for previous years.

Mogherini noted that an agreement was being reached in which the EU will provide 20 million euros in aid to support community protection projects and announced a progress in the amendments to the rules of origin agreement and expected to be completed within weeks.

She pointed out that providing soft loans to Jordan is also linked to achieving economic and tax reforms, whose the nature and how to achieve them are to the Kingdom to decide.
