Canada warms at twice the global rate, report says

Ottawa, A scientific report issued by the Canadian Ministry of Environment showed that the country is warming up faster than the rest of the world.

The report, titled “Canada’s Changing Climate Report” said that Canada’s climate has been and will continue to warm at double the rate of global warming.

It added that the country’s average land temperature increased by 1.7 degrees Celsius since 1948, while global average land temperature increased by 0.8 degrees Celsius only.

Climate science and climate change consultant in Canada, Elizabeth Bush, told CTV news agency that the report supports the fact that adapting to climate change is an imperative, and urgent action is needed to reduce emissions.

“The Canadian Arctic has been hit even harder, with a 2.3 C increase, creating a risk that by the middle of this century most marine regions in the Canadian North will be ice-free for at least a month at a time,” she added.

The report showed that if the world keeps emitting at the same rate, most parts of Canada will see increases of between 7 C and 9 C, with the far reaches of the Arctic seeing temperature changes in excess of 11 C, adding that in the worse scenario, Canada will see 10 times as many deadly heat waves and twice as many extreme rainstorms.
