Beijing, China Monday protested U.S. vessels’ entering without authorization the waters near the Spratly Islands, an archipelago in the South China Sea that Beijing regards as its sovereign territory, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday.
“The actions of the U.S. vessels constitute a brusque violation of China’s sovereignty and would undermine peace, security and order in the relevant waters. The Chinese party expresses extreme dissatisfaction and a strong protest,” Hua told a briefing.
She stressed that China had “indisputable sovereignty” over the islands and respected the freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, but would not tolerate the use of this freedom as a pretext to undermine the country’s sovereignty and security.
